Russia: Xi, Putin Meet at Eastern Economic Forum

What Happened: Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, CNBC reported Sept. 10. After their meeting, a group of Russian and Chinese businesses released a statement saying they were considering 73 joint investment projects worth over $100 billion.

Why It Matters: The meeting demonstrates Russia's growing economic focus on Asia as Moscow attempts to weather its prolonged standoff with the West.

Background: The fourth annual Eastern Economic Forum is scheduled for Sept. 10-11 and will feature appearances from a North Korean delegation and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, among others.
