Saudi Arabia, UAE: Countries Join U.S.-Led Maritime Security Mission

What Happened: Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are joining the International Maritime Security Construct, a U.S.-led mission to ensure safe passage for commercial shipping around the Strait of Hormuz, Bab el-Mandeb strait, Gulf of Oman and Persian Gulf, Reuters reported Sept. 19.

Why It Matters: Although Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates initially hesitated, their decision to join the maritime mission highlights prevailing concerns among Arab nations in the Persian Gulf that Iran poses an ongoing threat to their commercial shipping interests.

Background: Recent attacks against Saudi Arabia's oil infrastructure have renewed risks to regional stability after Iran seized a British oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz in July.
