What Happened: Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki has made his first visit to Somalia to meet with members of the Somali government, including President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, Reuters reported Dec. 13.
Why It Matters: Afwerki's visit comes amid a recent attempt to impeach Mohammed for alleged “secret agreements” between Somalia, Eritrea and Ethiopia over port access, economic integration and security cooperation, among other things.
Background: The leaders of Eritrea, Somalia and Ethiopia met in November to follow up on tripartite talks from September amid growing violence in the region.
