Sweden: Stockholm To Request Extension Of Border Controls For Security Reasons

Sweden's minister for justice and home affairs, Morgan Johansson, said that there is still a security threat which necessitates the continuation of border controls toward Germany and Denmark, EU Observer reported April 12, citing Swedish public broadcaster Ekot. Extending border controls for an additional six months requires approval from the European Commission, which will consider Swedish and similar requests from other member states. Border controls initially put into effect during the influx of migrants into the EU are now being extended to protect against terrorism-related security threats, keeping immigration and migrant relocation at the forefront of EU foreign policy debates.
