Syria: Russia Halts Air Coordination, Threatens To Shoot Down Coalition Jets

Russia's Defense Ministry said June 19 it is suspending cooperation to prevent air incidents over Syria with the U.S.-led coalition, a day after a U.S. fighter jet shot down a Syrian government plane near Tabqa, RT reported. In its statement, the Russian Defense Ministry threatened to track and shoot down any coalition planes and drones operating west of the Euphrates river. The U.S. jet downed the Syrian plane after it dropped bombs near fighters from the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, the coalition's main ally in the fight against the Islamic State. The incident occurred amid clashes between the U.S.-backed group and loyalist forces, who have have been moving southeast of Tabqa into Islamic State-held territory.
