Syria: U.S. Closely Monitoring Allegations of Chemical Weapons Use

What Happened: The United States is closely monitoring allegations of chemical weapons use in northwestern Syria, according to U.S. State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus, CNN reported May 21.

Why It Matters: The warning comes after an alleged May 19 chemical attack, which the United States suspects was carried out by the Syrian government of Bashar al Assad.

Background: The United States carried out military strikes against the Syrian government in April 2017 and April 2018 over al Assad's use of chemical weapons.
