Turkey: Protesters Moving Toward Incirlik Air Base

1 MIN READJul 28, 2016 | 17:03 GMT

Demonstrators are moving toward Incirlik Air Base in the southern Turkish city of Adana for anti-U.S. protests, images circulating on Twitter on July 28 show. It is currently unclear how many people are taking part in the demonstration. The base houses thousands of U.S. and NATO military personnel and has served an important role in the U.S.-led coalition's aerial operations against Islamic State targets in Iraq and Syria. Anti-U.S. sentiment has risen in Turkey following the July 15 failed coup. Many in the country have suggested the United States played a role in the attempted coup and have demanded the air base be closed. Turkey's government blames Fethullah Gulen, a powerful religious and opposition leader currently living in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania, for the attempted putsch. Ankara has demanded his extradition.
