Turkish authorities have arrested eight top human rights activists including Idil Eser, the Turkey program director of Amnesty International, BBC reported July 6. Eser and the rest of the group were arrested, along with two trainers from Germany and Sweden, during a police raid on an Amnesty workshop in Istanbul on July 5, according to a statement from the human rights group. Turkish police have detained tens of thousands of people and dismissed or suspended around 150,000 teachers, civil servants, judges, police, soldiers and others in the wake of the country's failed coup last July.
