U.S.: Airlines Change Reference to Taiwan

What Happened: U.S. carriers Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and American Airlines said they are amending how their websites refer to Taiwan after the Chinese government accused them of missing deadlines to do so, the South China Morning Post reported Aug. 9.

Why It Matters: Failing to comply with China's demands could spur Beijing to adjust permits to discourage tour groups from flying on these carriers.

Background: Beijing is demanding that airlines specifically list Taiwan as a part of China. The Chinese government views Taiwan as a wayward province and hopes to reunify the island with the mainland.
