U.S.: Negotiators Propose Wage Requirements For NAFTA Auto Manufacturing

U.S. negotiators have introduced a plan that would tie auto industry wage requirements to areas that pay higher salaries under a revised North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Reuters reported March 30. The proposed requirements, which NAFTA members are reportedly reviewing, would benefit the United States and Canada, whose workers claim that lower pay in Mexico has increased manufacturing in the country. U.S. Congressional pressure to remain in the trade pact will continue driving the slowly progressing negotiations.
