Venezuela: Constituent Assembly Takes Powers From Congress

Venezuela's controversial constituent assembly will take over powers from the opposition-led congress, AP reported Aug. 18. The move effectively gives the all-powerful constituent assembly the authority to pass legislation on a range of issues affecting Venezuela's security and sovereignty. Members of Venezuela's congress condemned the move, calling it another step in a coup by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro
