Venezuela: Mexico Withdraws From Talks

Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray announced that Mexico will withdraw from negotiations between the Venezuelan government and its opposition, Efecto Cocuyo reported Jan. 23. To justify the decision, Videgaray cited the recent announcement that Venezuela's 2018 presidential election will be held April 30, which he called a tight deadline. Though Venezuela's administration has engaged in negotiations with opposition leaders, the country's political elites are not interested in holding an election that could remove them from power.
