Yemen: Second Commercial Vessel Attacked In 3 Days

A tanker hauling chemical products through the Bab el-Mandeb strait was attacked Oct. 27, the second assault on a commercial ship in the area in the past three days, the Maritime Herald reported. The Melati Satu was passing through the strait on its way from Ukraine to India when a fast-moving boat approached the ship, firing a rocket-propelled grenade and gunshots. No people onboard were wounded and no damage occurred to the tanker. Following a distress signal from the crew, a Saudi naval vessel arrived and escorted the ship out of the strait. The attack on the Melati Satu occurred just days after a rocket-propelled grenade attack on another commercial ship passing through the strait, the Galicia Spirit, which was hauling liquefied natural gas. No injuries or major damage were reported as a result of that attack, either. It is still unclear whether Houthi rebels in Yemen are responsible for the attacks, or whether they might be the work of Somali pirates. Still, the small, unsophisticated weapons used in the attacks do not pose a significant threat to large vessels passing through the strait.
