Chile's Presidential Election: Potential Outcomes and Their Implications

Chile will hold general elections on Nov. 16 to elect a president, the entire Chamber of Deputies and half the Senate. A runoff will follow on Dec. 14 if no presidential candidate secures over 50% of the vote. President Gabriel Boric cannot seek re-election, and his coalition backs Communist Party candidate Jeannette Jara. Her main rivals include far-right candidate Jose Antonio Kast, center-right candidate Evelyn Matthei and ultra-right candidate Johannes Kaiser. Chile's Lithium Industry Holds its Breath as Boric Pursues Nationalization

Increased state control of Chile's lithium sector may lead to a mechanism for new investment, but higher associated costs could limit investor interest. On April 20, Chilean President Gabriel Boric announced that he would seek to "nationalize the country's lithium industry" through a proposed "National Lithium Strategy." This strategy would require all new lithium contracts to be public-private partnerships in which the state has majority control over mining. However, the strategy does not include any immediate expropriation of assets; instead, it would simply let private companies' existing lithium mining contracts expire, which would mitigate the short-term impact of the new strategy on the country's lithium output. The proposed National Lithium Strategy also stipulates that Chile, via its state-owned mining companies, would be able to exercise veto powers over key decisions related to lithium exploration and extraction. Charting Chile’s Future Under a New Leftist President

The election of a leftist president will likely see Chile’s government impose higher taxes on wealthy households and large companies, especially those in the crucial mining sector, which could worsen the business climate in the country. Leftist student leader Gabriel Boric will be sworn in as Chile’s next president on March 11 after beating out his right-wing opponent Jose Antonio Kast in the Dec. 19 presidential runoff race. A Vote on the Future of Chilean Copper and Lithium

In less than two weeks, voters will make a decision that could affect the crucial Chilean copper and lithium extraction industries, buttresses of the country's economy and a key area for future growth. In a Dec. 17 election, voters will choose between center-right candidate Sebastian Pinera and center-left candidate Alejandro Guillier, the top two finishers in the first round of balloting, to become the country's next president. The first-round results also included an unexpectedly strong showing by Beatriz Sanchez, the candidate representing the left-wing Broad Front coalition, elevating the group's political stature during the contest's deciding round. While capturing Broad Front's support could boost Guillier's chances of victory, to win the coalition's backing, he would have to incorporate its economic proposals, which could have a major effect on the country's energy and mining industries.

On paper, Chile can easily be considered a water-rich nation. The thin strip of land stretching along South America's western coast boasts over 50,000 cubic meters of water per person, per year. But looks can be deceiving.
