Protests in Iran Provide a Window for U.S. and/or Israeli Intervention
The latest round of mass protests in Iran could endure for several more weeks or months before they are likely suppressed by crackdowns, creating a window of opportunity for risky Israeli and/or U.S. military or covert action against Iranian senior leadership. Iran's most serious protests in at least two years entered their eleventh day on Jan. 7, with no clear end in sight. The U.S.-based NGO Human Rights Activists in Iran reported on Jan. 6 that protests over the country's deteriorating economic situation have occurred in at least 285 locations across 27 provinces, and that 34 protesters have been killed and more than 2,000 arrested in the resulting security crackdown. On Jan. 7, Vice President Mohammed Jafar Ghaempanah claimed that President Masoud Pezeshkian ordered security forces to avoid violence unless national security is compromised. India's recent deals with New Zealand and Oman signal modest efforts to expand trade, investment and labor mobility, but various constraints will limit their impact as India struggles to reach larger agreements with partners like the United States, European Union and Gulf Cooperation Council. The Precarious Path to South Arabian Independence
Yemen's Southern Transitional Council (STC) -- backed by the United Arab Emirates -- has been on a blitz across the remnants of the central government's territory. A quick glance at a Yemeni Civil War map might suggest that a returned South Yemen may be on the cusp of reemergence after three decades within a unified state. But this path to de facto independence, while increasingly viable, is still far from a sure thing -- and for the STC to achieve it, the group must balance the pillars of Yemeni geopolitics with a care that suggests a long road still lies ahead.

Yemen's Anti-Houthi Bloc Is Fracturing
In Yemen, territorial advances by UAE-backed forces will deepen fragmentation within the anti-Houthi camp, triggering violence that will undermine stalled ceasefire efforts. Despite Emirati hopes, a near-term push toward southern independence is unlikely, but renewed instability would encourage the Houthis to launch their own offensive. Algeria's Islamic Bonds an Incomplete Step Toward Diversifying Government Revenues
Algeria's inaugural issuance of Islamic bonds marks a symbolic step toward diversifying government funding, but the limited size of the effort means it will have minimal short-term impact on reducing dependence on hydrocarbon revenue and more traditional forms of raising government funds. Algeria is set to issue its inaugural sukuk, or Islamic bonds, with a seven-year maturity and a 6% fixed annual return in early 2026. According to reports, the initial issuance will be valued at around 297 billion Algerian dinars, or $2.3 billion, equivalent to about 1% of the country's GDP. The bond sale -- which was initially planned for November 2025 but later postponed due to government efforts to finalize debt issuance regulations -- is only open to Algerian citizens and backed by state-owned real estate assets. The original plans for sukuk issuance, initially reported in September, came during early discussions for Algeria's 2026 fiscal year budget.
